    Dark Souls PC

Unless it's coming out on the Wii U or has DLC for tantric demon sex, it's pretty much assumed that it's an announcement for Dark Souls PC. I post this here because of that one clockfriend who ventured here not too long ago to make us sign his petition that everyone said wouldn't work. And lo, the hour draw nigh.

I want to cast lots that it's actually the DLC though.

    Oh my god YES.

This is probably my second favorite game of all time. I had no hope it would actually come to PC, but I'm glad I was wrong.

Day one buy if it actually happens.

The developers said they don't plan to release DLC for the game, so my vote goes toward it being on PC, or unknown third option.

I can't really see it happening unless Gabe Newell himself bribes the developers.

Confirmed to be coming to PC with additional content. The version released for PC will apparently be the same as the normal version with the addition of a few extra bosses.

    Release date set for August.

edit: Evilore is the admin of NeoGAF btw, so he's a very reliable source

That's pretty unlikely. The game is too old now and nobody would buy it over Dark Souls. It wouldn't make any money.

Just wait a few years for a good PS3 emulator to come out if you really want to play it.

This may sound bad, but Dark Souls is a Games for Windows LIVE title.

Despite its issues, are we in any position to complain?

I've never had a problem with GFWL. That's what Super Street Fighter 4: AE uses and it works perfectly fine.

Being on GFWL does not exclude it from being on other platforms either. I got SSF4:AE on steam, after all.

I've heard people say that GFWL ruined SF4AE due to rampant cheating and the leaderboards never being reset

I've never had a problem with it. There is cheating on the xbox version of Dark Souls though, so we may see some health cheats in the PC version. That would probably happen regardless of what web service they used, though.

It will still be better than the console version though. Blighttown would regularly drop as low as 5 fps in the PS3 version.

Pretty much the PC port of dark souls can be summarized as "better than the console version in every way, but not as good as it could be"

Whose to say you won't in the future? There's a reason tons of people want this on steam and not GFWL. If they have yet to reset the PC leaderboards for SF4AE I could only imagine the neglect Dark Souls would suffer on such a service.

Did you even read the neoseeker article? It's a straight console port. If anything it's going to be the exact same.

    Somehow I doubt this.

Arent Dark Souls and Demons Souls mainly about the single player mode anyways? I wasnt aware of a competitive multiplayer element where leaderboards were a huge deal. Or is this some sort of "who can beat the game the fastest" thing.

I'm not sure about Dark Souls but I know in Demon's souls there was a leaderboard of sorts. There's also events that are controlled by the server and what not and of course you can raid players games and beat the fuck out of them if you want.

The framerate drop was PURELY a hardware problem. It had nothing to do with the software. The reason why it lagged was because the game was being played on crappy 5 year old hardware; aka a PS3. If the exact same code was played on a decent computer there would be no framerate drop at all. I'm sure I could play Dark Souls as is on my computer without ever dropping below the locked in 30 fps.

    Somehow I doubt this.
Can you name even one thing that is better on consoles than on the PC version? And before you say netcode, I'll remind you that Games for Windows Live uses the same netcode as the xbox 360 (that's why they're using it in the first place). The only difference is that it will be harder to purchase the game on PC in some regions.

The multiplayer aspect of the Souls games is a fundamental aspect of its quality. The multiplayer is seamlessly integrated into the one player experience to a degree that I've never seen in another game. The system is brilliant IMO. Individuals are rewarded for helping out other players, but are equally rewarded for going out of your way to dick over another player. PvP is also a pretty high stakes game; at low level you have to use a limited availability consumable item to invade at all, and later on there's a risk of being invaded back by a special player covenant that has the power to invade anybody who has invaded other peoples worlds for personal gain. On the other hand, anybody who chooses to stay online (which has many benefits, such as getting help from other players) runs the risk at all times of being invaded by another player and having to fight for their lives. So in the end, the multiplayer consists of helpful bros, assholes who ruin your day, and vigilantes who hunt down assholes. And that's not even getting into the Gravelords and the Forest Protectors who have their own deal...

This sounds really awesome, I knew there was a form of multiplayer but I was told it was rudimentary.

It is a very simple system, but it's brilliance is in it's simplicity. While most games partition off the multiplayer experience in its own separate section with various gamemodes and such, Demon's and Dark Souls instead seamlessly implement it into the single player game. You just go along playing by yourself, decide you need help or could do some company, and a short time later you have an ally. No special mode, no exiting to menu, no lobbies. The PvP is also unique in that you don't get to choose when it happens. Rather than being a fair match of player vs player with agreed upon rules at an appointed time like a fighting game or FPS, you're just suddenly being stalked by a malevolent enemy in the middle of your single player game without warning. While there is some honor in the game (players tend to bow before starting PvP to show respect and that they'll fight fairly), it is often NOT a fair fight because the invader is usually outnumbered (2 summons and a host vs. 1 invader) and very willing to play dirty.

I really do think it's a brilliant system. People who play the games in offline mode are missing out on a lot.
